Phoenix Suns withstand late OKC Thunder rally in close road win

The Phoenix Suns regained the NBA’s top spot, but didn’t play like it in the late stages of Sunday’s 123-120 escape over Oklahoma City to begin a three-game road trip.

“We certainly could’ve executed better down the stretch,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “… We got a win on the road, we’re thankful for that, but we know we can be much better, especially in closing moments.”

Winners of four straight, Phoenix (46-18) withstood a late Thunder surge to win for the first time in Oklahoma City since 2010 as the Suns take the season series, 2-1.

The Suns had lost 16 consecutive road games against the Thunder (21-44), who was coming off a 152-95 home loss Saturday to Indiana.

“That’s been the tale of the season for us, playing down to the competition and playing up to our competition, too, and that’s not what the great teams do,” Suns All-Star guard Devin Booker said. “The great teams get better every night no matter the opponent.”
