ASU football places walk-on WR Giovanni Sanders on scholarship

It isn’t always easy for a walk-on to make a good impression but Arizona State wide receiver Giovanni Sanders appears to have done that because he has been awarded a scholarship.

The good news came in a phone call from wide receivers coach Prentice Gill.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is a newcomer to the Sun Devils, having spent his freshman year at Division II Dixie State (Utah) in 2018 and then his sophomore season closer to home at Riverside Community College (Calif.) in 2019. That latter season he caught 59 passes for 854 yards with eight touchdowns for a team that went 13-0.

He came to ASU as a walk-on and participated in spring drills, earning praise from offensive coordinator Zak Hill.

“He did some really good things,” Hill said. “The walk-ons don’t get the same reps other guys get so it’s not easy but I definitely liked what I saw out of him.

Sanders is a graduate of Murrieta Mesa High School (Calif.) were he excelled in football, basketball and track.
